Collection: Coir Craft

Coir craft is a unique and eco-friendly handicraft in Odisha, derived from the nuts of coconut palms. The process of coir craft involves curing coconut husks in saline or freshwater for several months to increase the fibre's flexibility, strength, and durability. The coir fibre is then sorted and moulded into various shapes and sizes, often with the help of threads and glue.

This traditional craft is practiced mainly by rural women in various areas of Odisha, particularly in the Raghurajpur village near Puri, which is a major tourist destination and a hub for traditional arts. The artisans involved in this craft are farmers who use coir as an additional source of income.

Odisha's coir craft has received several awards, including the "Coir Vikas Yojana" scheme by the government to promote its development and the "Life Time Achievement Awards in Handicrafts" for artisans like Amiya Podar, who has been recognized for his contributions to the craft.
